He did not answer.

Daniel looked around the room.

“I want to be clear about one thing.”

Everyone turned.

“I don’t want Arcturus to keep people trapped.”

That surprised them.

“If someone needs to leave, let them leave.”

He thought about the badge.

“But make sure they aren’t leaving because the company was too rigid to distinguish between commitment and physical presence.”

Patricia nodded slowly.

Daniel continued.

“My daughter didn’t need Arcturus to save her.”

His voice became quieter.

“She needed me.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“And I needed an employer capable of understanding that the two things weren’t automatically incompatible.”

Daniel sat.

The silence afterward was not emotional.

It was calculation.

Evelyn knew boardrooms well enough to recognize it.

Financial calculation.

Political calculation.

Risk calculation.

Then Patricia Weir spoke.

“I support the program.”

Victor turned.

“You haven’t seen final implementation numbers.”

“I have.”

“The downstream managerial burden—”

“Victor.”

Her tone stopped him.

“I returned from maternity leave thirteen years ago and discovered half my responsibilities had been reassigned because my chief executive assumed motherhood had changed my ambitions.”

The table went still.

“I spent five years proving something no man in my role had been asked to prove.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Companies are very good at describing preventable talent loss as unfortunate.”

Then she looked at Evelyn.

“I’m done calling it unfortunate.”

Evelyn let the silence remain.

Then:

“I’m calling the vote.”

Victor leaned forward.

“Evelyn, I strongly recommend postponement.”

“Your recommendation is recorded.”

“This program changes operating authority across the company.”

“Yes.”

“Then we need more analysis.”

“We’ve had twelve weeks.”

“Not enough.”

“For you, I suspect there will never be enough.”

Victor’s face hardened.

Evelyn looked around the table.
