Request declined.

That was all.

Daniel asked whether alternatives were available.

Victor’s assistant scheduled fifteen minutes.

The meeting lasted nine.

“I’m not asking permanently,” Daniel said.

“I understand.”

“Then what’s the concern?”

“Precedent.”

Daniel stared.

“My daughter has a documented trauma condition.”

“And I’m sorry.”

“This isn’t about sympathy.”

“I know.”

“I’m proposing a structured trial.”

Victor folded his hands.

“If I approve exceptions for every difficult personal circumstance, I no longer have an operating model.”

“Every difficult personal circumstance?”

Victor caught the wording.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“It’s what you said.”

“Daniel, I respect your work.”

“Then trust me to do it.”

“This is not about trust.”

“What is it about?”

“Consistency.”

Daniel sat very still.

Victor continued.

“You are a senior operational lead. Your visibility matters.”

“My output matters.”

“Both matter.”

“Why?”

“Because leadership requires presence.”

Daniel thought about Lily sitting silently at the kitchen table while he attended an 8:00 a.m. meeting about visibility.

“Okay.”

Victor seemed surprised.

“Okay?”

“Thank you for your time.”

Daniel walked out.

That was when the decision truly began.

Not resignation.

Not yet.

But the slow realization that the system would not move until he did.

The drawing of Birch Road finished it.

At two in the morning on Monday, Daniel wrote his resignation.

By ten, the badge was on Margaret’s desk.

By noon, he was driving home.

By Wednesday, most of their belongings were packed.

Daniel called his mother from the parking garage after resigning.

“I need the house.”

A pause.

“For how long?”
