He had forgotten the game.

Grief had buried dozens of tiny rituals beneath larger memories.

That August afternoon, Daniel finished around a cluster of lavender.

Without thinking, he sat back and muttered to himself:

“Clear?”

Behind him, a voice answered.

“Clear.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

He turned.

Lily sat exactly where she had been.

Biscuit beneath one arm.

Her face calm.

For several seconds Daniel thought he had imagined it.

Then Lily looked toward the cleaned flower bed.

“Clear.”

Again.

One word.

Soft.

Complete.

Her first spoken word in fourteen months.

Daniel remained on his knees in the soil.

His hands began shaking.

Lily watched.

He pressed the back of one wrist against his mouth.

The sound that came out of him was half laugh and half sob.

He looked toward the oak tree because looking directly at his daughter became too much.

Claire should have been there.

That thought arrived at exactly the same moment as joy.

Daniel had spent months believing grief and happiness were opposite states.

They were not.

They could occupy the same breath.

Lily climbed down from the porch.

She walked across the lawn.

Sat beside him in the dirt.

Then leaned her head against his upper arm.

Daniel did not ask her to say another word.

He did not call Dr. Reeves.

Did not grab his phone.

Did not make the moment perform for anyone.

He sat beside his daughter until the light changed.

That evening, after Lily slept, he called Paula.

“She spoke.”

Paula was silent for a second.

“What did she say?”

“Clear.”

Daniel laughed.

“It was our garden thing.”

“I remember you mentioning it months ago.”

“I forgot.”

“She didn’t.”

“No.”

“How did you respond?”
