"Old man by the door. Get in the ring." The voice came through six overhead speakers and bounced against the steel rafters of Apex MMA Training Center.

Six hundred spectators turned in the same direction, following the extended finger of Colt Brennan, the undefeated middleweight champion whose face covered the banners above the exits.

At the back wall stood Byron Fletcher, seventy years old, wearing a faded security uniform with a brass name tag and a radio clipped to his belt. He had spent the first half of the evening making sure people could find those exits if something went wrong. He had never imagined the greatest danger in the building would be the man everyone had paid to watch.

"I'm security, sir," Byron said. "I'm working. I don't fight."

"That's why I picked you," Colt replied, smiling at a camera as if he had delivered the cleverest joke in the world. "Nine-second challenge. I'm going to put somebody down, and tonight that somebody is you. Come on, grandpa. Show everybody what you're worth."

A few people laughed because Colt was famous and they wanted to be part of whatever he thought was funny. Others stayed silent, their phones raised, caught between discomfort and the thrill of seeing an unexpected spectacle. Byron glanced toward Wade Prescott, the owner of Apex, hoping for the simple intervention any responsible employer would provide. Wade tipped his head toward the ring. That was all. In the silence behind the laughter, Byron understood that nobody in charge intended to protect him.

Colt crossed the floor and caught Byron by the forearm. The movement was sudden and proprietary, the way someone might tug a microphone cable or move a chair out of a doorway. Byron looked down at the fingers pressing into his sleeve, then slowly raised his eyes to the younger man's face. For an instant, something in the old guard's expression changed. He did not appear furious or frightened. He became completely, almost unsettlingly still.

Nobody watching understood what that stillness meant. They saw a thin elderly man trapped by a powerful fighter with twenty-two professional victories. They did not know what Byron had once done for a living, how much he had lost, or why he had spent decades refusing to demonstrate what his hands could do. Most of all, they had no idea that the four seconds waiting on the other side of those ropes would turn the entire building against the man whose name was printed on every wall.

Three years earlier, when Byron first applied for the night security position at Apex, he had asked only two questions. He wanted to know whether the job required lifting heavy equipment and whether the building had a quiet place where an employee could sit during a
