Within the week, companies began reviewing their relationships with Colt. A sportswear sponsor removed his image from its website. Two energy drink brands suspended campaigns, then terminated their agreements after reviewing the allegations and publicity risk. A supplement company withdrew a long-running promotional contract. The decisions were made in boardrooms far removed from Apex, by people who had once celebrated Colt's ability to attract an audience regardless of controversy.

Wade called sponsors personally, promising a comeback story. He argued that Colt had apologized for isolated misunderstandings and that the market would soon move on to another scandal. Several executives asked him whether the full event recording had been available when he distributed the shortened clip. Wade gave different answers depending on who asked. One sponsor's lawyer requested the gym's footage preservation policy. Wade ended the call soon after that question.

The North Carolina athletic authorities opened a formal review of Colt's professional conduct and the promotional event. The commission requested records from the gym, statements from staff, and information about whether the challenge had been advertised as a contest despite its lack of basic safeguards. Lawyers argued over jurisdiction and the distinction between a sanctioned bout and an entertainment stunt. Whatever the technical answers, the investigation put Colt's future bookings at risk. Promoters who had once chased his undefeated record stopped returning calls until the matter could be clarified.

Colt was furious at the speed with which his world changed. He had trained hard for years, and his talent was not imaginary. He believed his record should outweigh what he regarded as a handful of cruel jokes. But every time he tried to defend himself by listing his victories, an interviewer asked why he needed an elderly employee to be humiliated for the cameras. The question led to another he did not want to answer: why had Wade and the staff remained silent when Colt made people feel powerless? His professional success could not resolve either issue.

The commission eventually imposed a lengthy suspension from sanctioned competition and stripped Colt of the championship recognition associated with the event's sponsoring organization. The five-year restriction effectively ended the peak of his fighting career, although his lawyers appealed. The official decision focused on serious misconduct and exploitation of noncombatants rather than treating a lost exhibition as a professional defeat. His record of twenty-two sanctioned wins still reflected those bouts. The title and the opportunities attached to it were another matter.

Colt sat alone in his apartment on the evening the decision arrived. Framed photographs of himself holding championship belts covered one wall, and unopened packages from sponsors crowded the hall. He looked at an old training video in which he had won a difficult match through patience and exceptional technique. There had been a time when that skill was enough to make him proud. He could not remember exactly when it had become more important to make other people look weak.
