At eight, the announcer introduced Colt Brennan to a wall of sound. The crowd rose as the champion walked through the entrance tunnel, surrounded by lights and camera operators. He wore professional gloves, shorts carrying sponsor patches, and the practiced smile of a man who had learned exactly where every lens was positioned. He climbed through the ropes and moved across the canvas with undeniable athletic grace. Byron watched only long enough to confirm that the people leaning over the barrier were not obstructing an exit.

The challenge began with jokes. Colt knocked down a training dummy, then demonstrated how quickly he could move against a willing sparring partner. A screen displayed an exaggerated stopwatch, turning speed into the night's central attraction. The announcer asked whether anyone could last nine seconds against the undefeated champion. Arms shot into the air. Colt ignored them, scanning instead for someone who would look weak enough to guarantee that the video delivered humiliation rather than competition.

His eyes found Byron near the east wall. Nora saw the moment of recognition before Colt raised his arm. The champion pointed through the ring ropes, and the cameras swung around to reveal the elderly security guard in his plain uniform. "You, old man," Colt called.

"Get in here." Byron shook his head and indicated the emergency exit with one open hand. A loud laugh rose from a section of the bleachers as Colt leaned over the ropes and called him a coward.

"I'm working security, Mr. Brennan," Byron said. "I'm not here to fight."

"You're on my clock," Colt shouted back. "You do what I say. Nine seconds, grandpa. That's all it'll take."

The ring announcer glanced at Wade and lowered his microphone. "We have two cleared participants waiting," he whispered. "This man isn't one of them." Wade did not appear interested.

He gestured toward the camera operator, wanting the exchange filmed from a tighter angle. The sponsor representative standing beside him looked uncomfortable but did not interrupt. That silence became part of the mechanism that carried the event forward.

Byron turned to Wade. They had been employer and employee for three years, although their relationship had rarely gone beyond schedules and keys. Byron asked whether the gym was really ordering him to leave his security post and enter the ring. Wade nodded in front of the crowd.

"It's a controlled demonstration," he said. "Don't embarrass us by making a scene." The words gave Byron the answer he had been looking for, though not the one he wanted.

Nora pushed toward the edge of the floor. She told Wade that the situation was unsafe and reminded him that Byron had not agreed to participate. The owner stepped in front of her and said she was not running the event. Nora looked beyond him toward
