merchandise station. Fans lined up outside long before the doors opened, some wearing Colt's name across their chests, others carrying gloves they hoped he would sign. The gym that had once promised serious training had become an entertainment venue in which almost everything was arranged to point toward one man.

Byron arrived through the loading dock at the time printed on his revised schedule. He checked his radio and learned that two extra security workers had been hired for crowd control. One was unfamiliar with the building, so Byron showed him the emergency stairs and identified the fire doors that could not be blocked by cameras or equipment. He reported a power cable running across an exit path and waited until a stagehand secured it. He was not thinking about the challenge when he began his shift. He was thinking about how six hundred people would leave safely if the lights went out.

Wade crossed the floor with a headset and a clipboard. He gave orders without listening for replies, moving between a lighting technician and a sponsor representative who wanted a banner positioned more prominently behind the ring. When he spotted Byron standing near the emergency exit, he told a floor manager to keep the older guard away from the cameras. "We need the space looking young and sharp," Wade said, not quite quietly enough. Byron heard him and remained where he was. His assignment required him to guard the exit, not to improve the appearance of Wade's promotional footage.

Nora arrived with two athletes she coached and stayed after their scheduled demonstrations. She had volunteered to help supervise the warm-up area because she wanted to make sure nobody underage was pulled into the challenge. A printed event schedule listed the guest appearances, sponsor messages, and a fifteen-minute segment identified simply as "surprise opponent." No participant's name appeared beside it. Nora asked the floor manager for clarification and received the answer that Colt would decide live. She opened the recording app on her phone and checked that there was enough storage.

In the front row sat two college wrestlers who had entered a voluntary fan contest earlier that afternoon. They had medical clearance and had been told they might demonstrate a controlled takedown with the champion. Both wanted the opportunity. Nora saw them checking their mouth guards and recognized how easily the entire event could have remained a harmless promotion if Wade had followed the plan. But Colt had spent too many nights discovering that a chosen victim drew more attention than a willing competitor.
