Wade had more immediate problems. Investigators reviewing the competing video clips sought access to Apex's security server and original footage. A forensic examination recovered files that had been removed from normal view after the incident. The recovered material showed the challenge from its beginning, including the confrontation at the emergency exit. It was consistent with Nora's recording and contradicted claims that the camera system had simply failed at the critical moment. The district attorney's office began investigating potential evidence tampering and obstruction.

Wade insisted that a staff member had cleaned up storage to make room for future events. Emails and access logs told a less convenient story. They showed that deletions occurred after Colt's legal representatives began preparing a complaint, when the relevance of those recordings should have been obvious. The investigation had to establish who had authorized the changes and what they intended, questions no amount of public embarrassment could answer automatically. But the evidence was serious enough for prosecutors to pursue charges, and Wade found himself hiring counsel for his own defense.

Apex could not continue operating as though the disputes were confined to social media. Sponsors withdrew event financing, a licensing review disrupted promotional activities, and a growing number of members requested cancellations. Several trainers accepted positions elsewhere. Parents who had once been proud to enroll their children in a famous gym asked whether the staff were safe to be around. One afternoon, workers removed the ten-foot banner bearing Colt's face. The wall behind it was a lighter shade than the surrounding paint, leaving a pale rectangle that remained long after the fabric was gone.

When Wade announced that Apex would suspend operations, Celia was still at the front desk. She had worked there for four years, handled hundreds of angry phone calls, and repeatedly tried to make the building function under impossible demands. She watched the owner remove equipment labels and tell employees that their final checks would arrive by mail. She asked whether the cleaning crew would receive the notice in a language they could understand. Wade said human resources would deal with it, although the gym no longer had a human resources employee.

Celia thought of Byron waiting at the bus stop the day he was fired. She thought of the first incident report Wade had dismissed because there was supposedly no injury. She had believed that keeping her own record would be enough to protect her conscience, even while she continued to work in a place where the records were ignored. Now the building was closing, and she was one of several employees looking for a job. She hoped the next employer would be different. She also understood that a different employer would not become different unless people insisted on it.
