Nora recognized that danger before midnight. She copied her original recording to secure storage, retained the file with its full audio and time information, and sent duplicates to two trusted people, including Celia. She also preserved short segments showing Colt selecting Byron, Wade directing him toward the ring, and the initial physical grab. She did not edit or delete the original. She wanted anyone who reviewed the incident later to be able to see the entire sequence, even the parts that reflected poorly on the cheering audience.

A young member named Devin found Byron near the exit after the spectators had begun leaving. "That was incredible," he said. "I didn't know you could do that." Byron asked whether the young man had found his friends and whether he had a safe ride home.

Devin looked disappointed that the older guard would not discuss the fight. Then he said he had laughed when Colt first called Byron into the ring and was sorry. Byron accepted the apology without telling him that an apology erased everything.

The gym emptied after two in the morning. Byron checked the back doors, signed the incident log, and returned his radio to the charging station. On the page for that evening, he wrote that he had been directed away from his security post and forced into physical participation in a live event. He listed the witnesses he could recall and noted that medical staff had attended Colt. He did not describe himself as victorious. The report contained facts, because facts would remain after emotions changed.

He walked home through streets slick with rain. His knee had begun to swell, and the older injury in his shoulder hurt when he lifted his bag. By the time he reached the apartment, he was trembling from a mixture of exertion, fear, and memories he had not expected to return. He set his keys on the counter and stood in the darkness without turning on a light. The silence felt much louder than the arena had.

He thought of Miriam. She had often told him that the trouble with being capable was that people assumed capability meant a person did not need kindness. He wished she were there to ask whether he had done the right thing and to challenge whatever answer he gave. He imagined telling her that he had avoided the punch, stopped the confrontation, and walked away. He also knew she would ask why he had been forced to do any of it in the first place.

The next morning Nora called to ask how his knee felt. Byron told her it was stiff but improving. She said the video had already been seen by millions of people. He asked whether the gym's emergency exits had been secured when the last crew left. Nora laughed once, then stopped because she realized he was serious. She answered that they had, and then she told him to watch the news carefully because Colt was unlikely to accept what had happened.
