Mitchell rotated the monitor slightly.
Derek read the screen.
His face did not change at first.
Then he laughed.
“No.”
Mitchell did not.
“That’s him.”
Derek stared again.
“Could be another Samuel Owens.”
“The picture is right there.”
Derek looked toward Sam.
For the first time, uncertainty reached him.
Then pride smothered it.
“Doesn’t mean he didn’t commit a crime.”
Mitchell slowly removed his glasses.
“What crime?”
“Vehicle theft.”
“The vehicle registered to him?”
“Possible false documents.”
Mitchell stared.
“Do you have evidence of that?”
Derek’s silence answered.
Mitchell picked up his phone.
“Captain Briggs.”
Three floors above, Richard Briggs was reading budget projections.
The call changed his expression before Mitchell finished the first sentence.
“Say that again.”
Mitchell did.
Briggs stood.
“Where is Holloway?”
“Booking.”
“Where is Owens?”
“Here.”
“Do not move either of them.”
He hung up.
Then called Daniel Cole.
Cole answered from the internal affairs office.
“Cole.”
