Daniel entered.
Closed the door.
“Justice Owens.”
Sam studied him.
“Detective Cole.”
“You know who I am?”
“My wife mentioned you once.”
Daniel nodded.
“She called me.”
“Of course she did.”
Daniel sat.
“I’ve been investigating Officer Holloway.”
“For how long?”
“Six months.”
“How many?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Eight.”
Sam’s face changed slightly.
“Eight complaints before today?”
“Yes.”
“And he remained on patrol.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“Because I work inside the same institution I’m investigating.”
Sam understood.
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No.”
Daniel met his eyes.
“It’s an explanation.”
Sam’s cuffs rested on the table.
“What happens now?”
“I preserve everything.”
“Then?”
“I document what happened before anyone edits their memory.”
Sam nodded slowly.
“My wife gave you twenty minutes.”
Daniel almost smiled.
