“Money.”
Derek’s face tightened.
“You think this is a game?”
“No.”
“You’ve got a nice address. Nice suit. Nice car.”
“Yes.”
“None of it adds up.”
“To you.”
“That’s what matters right now.”
Sam watched him carefully.
Derek leaned forward.
“I’ve been doing this nine years. I know when something’s wrong.”
Sam folded his hands.
“What was wrong?”
“You.”
There it was.
Derek realized too late how the word sounded.
Sam waited.
Derek continued.
“You didn’t fit.”
“Fit what?”
“The circumstances.”
“What circumstances?”
Derek stood.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
“I genuinely want to hear you explain it.”
Derek pointed toward him.
“This is why people get themselves in trouble. You think because you know a few legal phrases you can talk circles around police.”
Sam’s expression remained calm.
“I requested an attorney.”
“This isn’t an interrogation.”
“Then I am free to leave?”
“Sit down.”
“Am I detained?”
Derek’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“For what offense?”
“Grand theft auto. Resisting. Possible fraudulent documentation.”
