He had complained two years earlier.

Nobody called.

A nurse named Rochelle Benton described watching investigators ask what she had done to “make Officer Holloway feel unsafe.”

A college professor, Dr. Elijah Morris, still had photographs of bruising from being restrained after a traffic disagreement.

A father named Terrence Blake described his seventeen-year-old son calling him crying from the roadside because Derek refused to believe the Mercedes belonged to the family.

Those interviews changed public perception.

Sam had made people pay attention.

The first eight explained why attention had been needed long before him.

Patricia watched the program beside Sam at home.

When it ended, she muted the television.

“There.”

Sam looked at her.

“That’s the story.”

She nodded.

“Not you.”

“No.”

“The pattern.”

“Yes.”

Patricia leaned back.

“You know, for someone with a career built around written opinions, you’re becoming annoyingly good at interviews.”

“I had coaching.”

“Who?”

“My wife.”

“Smart man.”

Derek eventually faced criminal charges connected to the arrest and to alleged false statements made afterward.

Federal civil-rights investigators also reviewed several incidents.

Sam had no role in deciding those cases.

When any filing connected to Derek reached a court over which Sam had administrative influence, he recused himself.

He refused private briefings from prosecutors.

He refused to discuss evidence outside his role as witness.

At one point an angry commentator accused him of orchestrating Derek’s prosecution.

Sam answered once.

“The rule of law would mean very little if I demanded judicial independence for strangers and abandoned it when I became the victim.”

Then he stopped responding.

The criminal case against Derek did not end with a dramatic surprise.

His attorneys challenged evidence.

Prosecutors narrowed charges.

Witnesses testified.
