A careful officer might have continued driving.

A careful officer might have approached only if some independent behavior suggested a problem.

Derek had already decided the car was suspicious.

Now the clean result became another suspicious thing requiring explanation.

Fake registration.

Identity theft.

Plate swapping.

He pulled behind the Lexus.

Sam looked up.

A patrol car stopped close enough to block him.

Sam lowered his phone.

Derek stepped out.

Sam had been a Black man in America long before he became a judge.

He knew the choreography.

Hands visible.

No abrupt movement.

Calm voice.

Do not reach until instructed.

Do not assume the officer knows who you are.

And above all, do not mistake being legally correct for being physically safe.

Sam lowered the window.

“Good afternoon, Officer. Is there a problem?”

Derek did not answer.

“License and registration.”

“Of course.”

Sam moved one hand slowly toward the glove compartment.

“My registration is inside. I’m reaching—”

“Stop.”

Derek’s hand moved toward his holster.

Sam froze.

“Step out first.”

“May I ask why?”

“I said step out.”

“I’m happy to cooperate. I’d simply like to understand why I’m being detained.”

Derek’s jaw tightened.

“Step out of the car.”

Sam opened the door.

Slowly.

He stood.
