The teenager filming from fifteen yards away laughed nervously.

“Oh, man. He’s done.”

The businessman near her nodded.

“Officer probably knows something we don’t.”

Sam heard both of them.

He did not turn.

He had spent nearly thirty years in courtrooms listening to people describe moments of violence, fear, humiliation, and institutional power. He had read transcripts in which five seconds of body-camera footage became fifty pages of legal argument. He had asked officers why they escalated. He had asked defendants why they ran. He had asked lawyers to separate what actually happened from what everyone later wished had happened.

Now the hood beneath his hands was real.

The pressure on his shoulder was real.

The voice behind him was real.

Derek reached for Sam’s wrist.

Metal closed around it.

Then the other.

Too tight.

Sam took one slow breath.

He began counting.

No articulable reason for the detention.

No reasonable opportunity to present identification.

Registration already confirmed.

No stolen-vehicle report.

Escalation without threat.

Physical restraint before investigation.

Statements revealing racial assumptions.

He reached seven before Derek finished searching him.

By the end of the afternoon, Sam would reach eighteen.

Derek leaned close enough that Sam could smell coffee on his breath.

“Easy arrest.”

Sam turned his head slightly.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

Derek smiled.

“Guys like you always have an explanation until we start checking.”

Sam’s voice remained level.

“Guys like me?”

Derek’s smile disappeared.

“Get in the cruiser.”

The teenager kept filming.

The businessman continued watching.

A woman leaving the grocery store glanced toward Sam, then looked away.
