The line went quiet.

Not disconnected. Quiet.

Duncan recognized the pause for what it was. The person answering was checking a name, context, and location while deciding what information should be disclosed to a stranger. Trent interpreted the silence as doubt and smiled.

"See?" he said to Marissa.

Then the woman came back on the line.

"Sir, is Mr. Vale currently with you?"

"Yes."

"Is he physically restrained?"

Trent's smile weakened. "We detained him for trespassing."

"I need a yes or no answer. Is he physically restrained?"

"Yes. Plastic restraints."

"Where are you?"

Marissa stepped closer. "Do not give them anything until they confirm the badge."

The woman heard her. "Who is speaking?"

"Marissa Crowley, president of Stonebridge Ridge Homeowners Association. We have lawful possession of this property. Mr. Vale entered without authorization and produced what appears to be a fraudulent federal credential."

"What is the address?"

Marissa gave it.

"Remain where you are," the woman said.

"Are you confirming whether he is actually employed by you?" Marissa asked.

The line disconnected.

For several seconds, Marissa looked annoyed rather than concerned. "Typical government office," she said. "No one willing to answer a simple question."

Duncan glanced at the wall clock. 3:52.

"You should remove the restraints now," he said.

Trent set the credential case on the folding table but did not return it. "Not until police get here."

"Police are coming."
