Duncan gave him the smallest possible shake of the head, a signal not to overreact and not to turn a civil property dispute into a federal display. Jonah understood immediately. They had worked together for five years.

"Cut the restraints," Jonah said.

Trent folded his arms. "We need to verify his identity first."

Jonah's tone remained calm. "I am verifying it. Cut them."

Marissa stepped in. "Deputy, I think you should know this individual entered association-controlled property, refused to cooperate with security, and may be using federal credentials to intimidate civilians."

Jonah finally looked at her.

"Ma'am, who are you?"

"Marissa Crowley. President of Stonebridge Ridge Homeowners Association."

"And you authorized this detention?"

"Our security contractor acted appropriately under the circumstances."

Jonah's gaze shifted back to Trent. "Why are you detaining our commander?"

The question changed the air.

Marissa's mouth opened but no words came out immediately. Trent stared at Jonah, then at Duncan. Evan looked down at the floor as though he had already seen the answer coming and wanted no part of the moment when it landed.

"Commander?" Marissa said at last.

Jonah pointed toward the credential case on the table. "Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Duncan Vale. Commander of our regional fugitive task force. That commander."

Trent's confidence collapsed in stages. First the set of his shoulders changed. Then his eyes moved from face to face searching for some sign of a joke. Then one hand went unconsciously toward the plastic restraint cutter on his belt.

Duncan spoke before Jonah could.

"Cut them."

Trent did.

The plastic snapped away from Duncan's wrists. He rubbed circulation back into his hands but did not raise his voice.

"My credential."

Trent picked up the leather case and held it out.

Duncan took it and checked both the badge and identification card before returning them to his jacket.

Marissa recovered enough to try a different strategy. "Mr. Vale, clearly there has been a serious misunderstanding. If you had simply identified yourself from the beginning -"

"I did identify myself," Duncan said. "As the property owner. That was the only identity relevant to your authority here."
