"That is not an answer."
Marissa crossed her arms. "I think I should speak with counsel before this goes any further."
"That is your right."
Calvin Drayton appeared at the gate before she could make the call. He carried his phone, a small notebook, and a clear plastic bag containing the old cut padlock he had retrieved from the dumpster after realizing it might matter.
"I think you are going to want this," he told Ruiz.
Inside the bag was the lock Duncan had used for years, one side freshly severed.
Calvin's phone video showed the chain being cut from the opposite side of the road. It also captured Marissa telling him the association had acquired the property. He had photographed plate numbers and written down times.
Ruiz looked at him with the rare expression detectives reserve for witnesses who have accidentally done half the documentation themselves.
"You kept all this?"
"I own a machine shop," Calvin said. "I write down everything that might cost me money later."
The county property database took less than a minute to load.
Owner: Duncan Vale.
No transfer.
No foreclosure.
No recorded association lien.
No possession order.
No easement benefiting Stonebridge Ridge.
Ruiz rotated the screen toward Marissa.
"Help me understand what I am missing."
Marissa opened the thick folder with hands that were no longer quite steady.
That was when everyone in the loading bay first saw the document she had been calling a court authorization.
And when Gareth Puit arrived twenty minutes later, he would need less than half a minute to understand that it was not one.
Gareth Puit arrived in a charcoal suit without a tie, carrying a leather briefcase and the expression of a man who had driven faster than he preferred because the last phone conversation had given him too many reasons not to waste time. He represented the Stonebridge Ridge association, not Marissa personally, a distinction he repeated twice before crossing the broken gate. The first thing he did was ask Detective Ruiz whether Marissa was free to speak with him privately.
"At the moment," Ruiz said. "She has not been detained."
Gareth looked relieved by only the smallest degree. "Then I need five minutes with her before anyone asks another question."
