"Then I told you I was not okay with you going."
"You didn't forbid me."
I stared.
"Are you serious?"
"I'm saying you let me make my decision."
"No."
"I accepted that I could not physically stop you."
"That is not permission."
She looked down.
The distinction seemed to unsettle her.
We ate quietly.
Then I asked:
"Did you sleep with him?"
Claire stopped chewing.
There are silences where the answer arrives before language.
She swallowed.
"Is that really where you want to go?"
"Yes."
"I don't think physical details are useful."
"That wasn't my question."
"What happened there was complicated."
"Did you have sex with Julian?"
Claire's face tightened.
"If I answer that, you're going to fixate on images."
"I am already fixating on images."
"I don't want to hurt you unnecessarily."
I almost laughed.
"That's the concern now?"
"Nathan."
"Yes or no."
She stared at her plate.
"I'm not discussing it like an interrogation."
There it was.
Not no.
I looked away.
Something inside me became very still.
We finished dinner without finishing the conversation.
Afterward, I started clearing the table.
Claire helped.
It was bizarre how easily our bodies returned to choreography.
I brought plates.
She rinsed.
I dried.
She opened the dishwasher.
I put glasses into the cabinet.
Nine years of muscle memory operating while our marriage stood somewhere outside the room bleeding.
Claire bent to put a plate into the lower rack.
I held another plate in my hands.
That was when the question arrived.
Not planned.
Not dramatic.
It simply formed from everything she had said.
"If Julian weren't going through a divorce," I said, "if he were completely available, would you have come back?"
Claire froze.
Halfway between standing and crouching.
One hand on the dishwasher.
The other near her knee.
She did not turn.
Did not say anything.
Did not finish standing.
Then, slowly, she reached toward the counter for her phone.
Her hand was shaking.
I watched.
"What are you doing?"
"I need to call Emily."
Her sister.
"Why?"
"I need someone to talk to."
"Answer me first."
Claire straightened.
Phone in both hands.
"That isn't fair."
"Why?"
"It's hypothetical."
"It doesn't mean anything."
"It means everything."
"I'm here."
She gestured around the kitchen.
"I came home."
"That wasn't the question."
"Nathan."
"If Julian had said, 'My marriage is over. I want you. Leave Nathan and let's try again,' would you have come back to this house?"
Her mouth opened.
Closed.
"You're twisting everything."
"Tell me I'm wrong."
"I came back."
"Because he wasn't available?"
"No."
"Then answer."
Tears appeared.
"I don't know."
I felt the plate in my hands.
Smooth ceramic.
Warm from the water.
Everything became extraordinarily clear.
