Whispers spread. Some guests offered fake smiles intended to disguise their discomfort. Others stared openly with condescension. A few looked away, unwilling to involve themselves in what was already becoming a display of prejudice.

Gladis seemed to notice the attention, yet she did not show embarrassment. Her eyes were kind but steady as she walked farther into the ballroom.

Katherine looked toward a nearby staff member and deliberately raised her voice. "Perhaps we should double-check the guest list. I think there has been a serious mistake here."

The comment drew more attention. Faces turned toward Gladis again, and the atmosphere tightened.

Gladis stopped for only a moment. A faint smile appeared on her wrinkled face, the expression of someone who had encountered judgment many times before and had learned how to survive it without surrendering her dignity.

As she continued walking, Katherine, Patricia, and Eleanor watched her approach the center of the room.

Patricia lifted her chin. "Who invited this old woman here? I don't understand what the organizers were thinking."

Eleanor gave a thin smile. "Maybe she's a housekeeper or a janitor who got confused. Maybe she forgot the staff entrance."

Several people nearby laughed.

Katherine joined them. "No wonder the ballroom smells so strange today. I thought this hotel had higher service standards."

Patricia covered her mouth to hide another laugh. "You're right. It seems like the guest list has really gone downhill. What a shame. This used to be such a prestigious affair."

Their laughter rose again, cold and comfortable in the protection of wealth and status. Gladis stood only a short distance away and heard every word.

Her face remained composed, but the cruelty was not harmless. The words struck the same old wounds that prejudice had created throughout her life. Still, she refused to let those people decide the shape of her dignity.

Across the room, several guests had begun watching Katherine's group with visible discomfort. A few frowned, but no one stepped forward.

Their silence hurt almost as much as the insults.

Several people who had heard everything shifted uncomfortably but remained where they were. One guest stared into his champagne rather than meet Gladis's eyes. A woman near the orchestra pressed her lips together and looked toward Katherine as though waiting for someone else to object first. No one did.

Gladis knew that kind of silence. She had seen it in waiting rooms, offices, stores, and formal spaces throughout her life. Cruelty rarely needed a room full of cruel people. Sometimes it needed only one or two people willing to speak and a much larger group willing to pretend they had heard nothing.

She tightened her fingers around the strap of her faded handbag, not because she was afraid, but because the familiar humiliation had awakened memories she did not want to carry into this evening. She had not come to the gala to prove anything. She had planned to sit quietly, listen to the hospital's plans, and leave without becoming the center of attention.

Instead, her dress had become evidence in the minds of strangers. Her shoes had become a verdict. Her skin had become permission for people who knew nothing about her to invent a life of poverty, servitude, and dependence.

Katherine seemed to take that silence as approval. She continued, louder now. "An old poor woman like her, do you really think she came here to donate? Or is she here to beg money from us?"

Patricia raised her champagne glass. "Maybe the organizers invited her so everyone could feel that their charity is truly noble. Brilliant strategy."
