Katherine suddenly noticed how many people around them had heard.

Gladis walked forward with the same calm pace she had used when entering the room. Every step seemed to strike directly at the assumptions that had filled the ballroom earlier.

Richard Thornton bowed respectfully and guided her to the microphone.

Gladis looked out over the crowd.

"I know my presence here tonight may come as a surprise to many of you," she began. Her voice was gentle, but it carried clearly through the room. "Sometimes we must accept that a person's true worth is not defined by skin color, appearance, or the clothes they wear, but by their heart, their actions, and their sincerity."

Her eyes briefly met Katherine's.

"I chose to appear here today not to seek recognition or fame, but to share one truth. Kindness and goodness should never be judged by the shallow standards we use to measure one another."

No one laughed now.

"I hope that from tonight forward, we learn to see the true value of each person and work together to create a better and fairer world for everyone, especially the innocent children who need our sincere help the most."

The ballroom erupted in applause.

Katherine remained frozen.

Her hand loosened, and the expensive champagne glass slipped from her fingers. It struck the marble floor and shattered.

The sharp sound turned several heads in her direction.

Patricia stared at the stage. "It can't be her," she whispered. "It can't be that woman."

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Katherine searched desperately for a way to understand what had happened, but every cruel word she had spoken now returned to her with unbearable clarity.

Guests began whispering about her group. A middle-aged woman nearby said to her husband, loudly enough to be overheard, "I cannot believe people who appear so elegant and moral could behave so horribly."

Her husband shook his head. "Wealth never guaranteed character. Tonight made that very clear."

Another group of women who had always treated Katherine with careful deference now looked at her with unmistakable disappointment. One quietly admitted that she had expected more thoughtfulness from someone who constantly spoke about civic responsibility. Another said nothing at all, but the way she turned away carried its own judgment.

Katherine had spent years protecting her reputation through perfect clothes, polished speech, strategic donations, and carefully chosen public appearances. None of those protections mattered now. The room had seen how she behaved when she believed the person in front of her had no status capable of challenging her.

That was the version of herself she could not explain away.
