Gladis looked at her quietly.

Katherine shifted beneath that calm gaze. "Honestly, we did not mean to offend you. Perhaps we rushed to judgment without really knowing who you were."

Gladis gently shook her head.

"Miss Winters, what saddens me is not that you did not know who I was. What saddens me is the way you treated a stranger based only on her skin color and appearance. If I were not standing here tonight as a wealthy philanthropist, would you truly want to apologize to me? Would you suddenly believe I deserved respect?"

Katherine froze.

Patricia and Eleanor lowered their eyes.

"Respect and kindness cannot come from personal benefit or embarrassment in front of a crowd," Gladis continued. "They must come from the heart. I do not blame you for misunderstanding my identity. I am saddened that the thing changing your attitude appears to be the discovery of my wealth, rather than the recognition that the way you judged me was wrong from the beginning."

The words were quiet, but they landed with more force than shouting.

Katherine could not defend herself because she knew Gladis was right.

"I hope you learn something from tonight," Gladis said. "Not for my sake, but for your own. We become better people only when we look honestly at what we have done and acknowledge our mistakes without pretending they were something else."

She turned and walked away.

Katherine stood motionless while the crowd around her remained silent. She realized that her attempt to save her reputation had only revealed how shallow her apology still was.

A few minutes later, Richard Thornton approached Gladis near the stage.

"Mrs. Sullivan," he said, "the hospital would like to recognize your generosity in a permanent way. We have prepared a place on our honor roll for your name. It would be our privilege to inscribe it there as an expression of our gratitude."

Guests expected Gladis to accept.

Instead, she shook her head.

"I am grateful for the kindness behind that offer, Mr. Thornton, but I have a special request."

The room became curious again.

"Rather than putting my name on the plaque, I would like the hospital to place a message honoring the children. The people who deserve to be honored here are not those of us who can donate money. They are the children who fight illness every day with extraordinary courage."

Richard hesitated, moved by the request.
