Katherine felt an unfamiliar unease. She had never seen Dr. Harris show this level of respect to anyone, certainly not to someone she had assumed was poor and insignificant.

She tried to reject the thought forming in her mind. She told herself that she could not possibly have judged the situation so badly.

Then Dr. Harris extended his hand and invited Gladis toward the main stage.

The hospital director was preparing to announce the evening's special sponsors.

The stage lights brightened. Classical music faded. Conversations softened to silence as Richard Thornton, the hospital director, stepped to the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he began, "first, I would like to sincerely thank all of you for attending tonight's charity gala. As we know, this evening is not merely a celebration. It is an opportunity to come together for children who are fighting illness every single day."

He paused, looking over the audience.

"Tonight, I also have extraordinary news to share. Our hospital has received the largest donation in its history, a gift of twenty-five million dollars dedicated specifically to our new pediatric department."

Astonished murmurs swept through the ballroom.

Katherine froze.

Twenty-five million dollars was an amount large enough to transform an institution and permanently alter the social standing of almost anyone associated with it. She tightened her grip around her champagne glass.

Richard smiled warmly. "Our benefactor initially wished to remain anonymous. After careful consideration, however, this person agreed to appear tonight because she believes her presence can convey an important message about kindness and equality."

Katherine's unease became dread.

"Please allow me to welcome our extraordinary benefactor, Mrs. Gladis Sullivan."

The ballroom went silent.

The change was so immediate that even the orchestra members seemed to sense it. Guests who had been whispering about Gladis now stared at her with open disbelief. People who had looked past her only minutes earlier straightened, suddenly eager to understand who she was.

Patricia's face lost color. Eleanor stared toward the stage. Katherine did not move.

For Katherine, the announcement was more than surprising. It dismantled the entire logic she had used from the moment Gladis entered the room. She had assumed the faded dress meant poverty, assumed the worn shoes meant low status, assumed the quiet manner meant powerlessness, and allowed those assumptions to justify cruelty.

Now the room had been told that the same woman had quietly committed twenty-five million dollars to sick children without asking that her name appear anywhere.

Patricia leaned closer to Eleanor, but neither seemed able to find a sentence that made the situation less catastrophic. Their earlier jokes returned with painful clarity. The housekeeper. The janitor. The suggestion that Gladis had come to beg. The laughter about diversity and appearances.

Every word had been spoken publicly.
