Another burst of laughter followed.

The remarks were no longer subtle enough to hide behind social politeness. Katherine's group had moved from suspicion into open humiliation, and the shift was obvious to everyone close enough to hear. A few guests turned away because they were embarrassed by what was happening. Others remained interested in the spectacle, watching Gladis as if her reaction were a form of entertainment.

No one asked whether she had been invited. No one checked the guest list before deciding that she did not belong. The assumption had come first, and every joke afterward had been built around it.

Gladis remained where she was. Her gaze deepened, but her posture did not change.

In another corner of the room, Dr. James Harris had noticed her. The respected middle-aged head of pediatrics was known for his compassion and his work with children from every background. He had dedicated his career to caring for patients regardless of wealth, race, or social position.

The remarks from Katherine's group troubled him deeply.

James had spent years in rooms where donors spoke about compassion while quietly carrying assumptions they would never admit in public. He knew the difference between awkwardness and contempt. What he was witnessing was not a misunderstanding about dress code. Katherine and her friends had decided who Gladis was before hearing her name.

His first impulse was to intervene immediately. The physician in him disliked watching anyone be isolated, and the man in him disliked the cowardice of a room that expected a target to defend herself while everyone else remained comfortable.

For a moment, he considered stepping forward, but something about Gladis's extraordinary composure stopped him. She did not look helpless. She looked patient, as though she knew something no one else in the ballroom knew.

Katherine, irritated by Gladis's refusal to look ashamed, finally decided to confront her directly.

She lowered her champagne glass, adjusted the hem of her blue gown, and crossed the room with slow, deliberate confidence. Patricia and Eleanor followed several steps behind her. Guests began watching openly now.

Katherine stopped directly in front of Gladis and looked her up and down again.

"Are you the janitor?" she asked loudly. "We need more water at that table over there."

Several nearby guests chuckled.

Gladis lifted her face and met Katherine's cold stare with warm brown eyes.

"I'm sorry, miss," she said softly. "I'm not a servant. I'm a guest, just like you."

The laughter faded.

For the first time, Katherine looked momentarily uncertain. She quickly covered the reaction with a dismissive smile.

"Oh, really? A guest? That's hard to believe. How much have you donated to this event, then?"

Gladis stayed calm.

"I believe charity should not be measured only by money or jewelry," she said. "Sometimes the real value lies in what we do for others rather than what we wear."
