caught my reflection in a window, still wearing the same uniform I had worn when the text arrived. I looked exactly like myself. The change was entirely invisible. I had entered the station as a man planning a wedding and would leave as a man whose fiancee was moving into another man's home.

When the night settled and the station became quiet, I lay awake in the bunk room listening for the next call. I thought about the hiking trail where I had proposed, the way Jade had smiled through tears, and the small pile of wedding brochures on our coffee table. I wondered whether the pregnancy was something she had just learned about or whether she had known during our argument about relocating. I wondered whether our friends had noticed anything and whether I had been the only person still operating under the assumption that our plans were shared. Questions came easily. Answers would not.

I allowed myself to feel angry without doing anything with the anger. That distinction mattered to me because anger can make a person reckless even when he believes he is acting out of principle. I had seen enough situations escalate because someone could not tolerate being embarrassed or disappointed. At the station, we are taught to recognize a changing environment before it becomes dangerous. I began treating the breakup the same way: identify what had changed, protect what needed protecting, communicate only when necessary, and do not create a second emergency trying to answer the first.

By Wednesday morning, I knew the initial tasks. I needed to verify the status of the apartment, separate our finances through the proper processes, retrieve my belongings, and determine what to do with the ring if it had been returned. I also needed to make sure Jade could collect anything that was hers without a confrontation. There would be uncomfortable conversations later, and I was not going to pretend I felt generous about them.

But I was not interested in punishing her by doing something I knew was wrong. The relationship was over. That fact was painful enough without turning the aftermath into a competition over who could be crueler.

My tour ended Wednesday morning. I drove home through traffic that seemed to move at half its usual speed and sat in my truck for a moment before going inside. Jade's car was gone. The apartment smelled faintly of the scented candles she used during filming, and several drawers in the bedroom stood open. She had taken clothes, toiletries, computer equipment, and the little rolling suitcase she used for short trips. On her side of the dresser, beside a dried flower from a bouquet I had once brought her, lay the engagement ring.
