I met Remy twice before everything fell apart. Both times he was friendly enough, almost aggressively friendly, with the practiced confidence of someone accustomed to selling motivation to people who arrived believing they had lost it. He shook my hand firmly, called my firefighting career impressive, and asked questions that sounded interested until he turned every answer back toward his own philosophy. On one occasion he said that commitment could become a cage if the people inside it stopped evolving at the same pace. I remember smiling politely and changing the subject because I did not want to spend an evening arguing abstract ideas with my fiancee's trainer. Months later I would hear those words differently.

For a while, the warning signs were scattered enough that I could ignore each one individually. Jade began staying late at the gym, saying she and Remy were planning a new content series. She took calls in the other room because the background noise from the television bothered her. She developed sudden opinions about my work schedule that did not match what she had told me when I was preparing for the lieutenant examination.

She wanted more travel, bigger collaborations, and a move to a larger city, one with an audience she thought understood her brand. I wanted to talk about those possibilities carefully. She wanted me to celebrate them as if the questions of employment, rent, and savings had already answered themselves.

Looking back, I can identify moments when I should have asked direct questions instead of treating every concern as a problem I had to solve privately. But hindsight is a luxury purchased with information I did not possess at the time. I knew that Jade was ambitious and restless, that her work had become increasingly important to her identity, and that Remy occupied a growing amount of her time. I did not know that she had begun a relationship with him. I certainly did not know that she was pregnant.

I was still comparing moving costs and promotion benefits when she had already made plans to leave. Three days before the message, we had the argument that I initially believed was our biggest problem. It began on a Saturday evening while we were putting groceries away. Jade had printed a list of possible neighborhoods in a larger city and spread the pages across the kitchen island between bags of vegetables and a carton of eggs.

She had highlighted fitness studios, restaurants with strong social-media followings, and shared workspaces where she might meet potential sponsors. There was even a column for estimated rental costs, although the numbers appeared to be for studio apartments rather than a home that could accommodate all the equipment she owned. She had clearly spent time preparing the proposal, and I made an effort to listen before asking questions.
