woman crossed at the light holding a bouquet of flowers. I remembered standing in that same store before the proposal, trying to choose something Jade would wear with pride for the rest of her life. It would have been easy to feel foolish about that version of myself. Instead I felt sad for him, because he had been acting in good faith with the information he possessed.

Back in the truck, I opened my budget. The automatic transfer toward Jade's car was three hundred and forty dollars each month, with fourteen payments remaining on her loan. The loan documents were in her name alone, and I had never signed as a borrower or guarantor. I had been helping voluntarily, using a scheduled transfer from my account because she said it simplified things. The remaining total was four thousand seven hundred and sixty dollars if the payments continued unchanged. There was nothing unclear about the legal arrangement, only about the expectation she had attached to it.

I called the bank and asked to cancel the standing transfer. The representative verified my identity, read the transaction details back to me, and confirmed the cancellation. I asked about the account we had used for household spending, which carried both our names. She explained that removing another account holder required formal steps and could not simply be done by one person over the phone.

I moved my future pay deposits to my separate account, requested statements, and arranged for the joint balance to be reconciled in writing before closure. The bank marked the request and explained what signatures might be needed. I thanked her and noted the reference number.

It was not the dramatic financial purge that some people might imagine. It involved ordinary forms, waiting periods, and the possibility that Jade would have to cooperate with a few final steps. That was fine with me. I was willing to meet legitimate obligations; I was no longer willing to subsidize a life I was not part of.

I made a list of shared bills and highlighted the ones for services I actually used. I left her money in the joint account untouched until we could agree on what belonged to each of us. A clean separation required more attention than simply making an angry phone call.

Next I contacted the property manager. The lease was still active, both our names were listed, and I asked what would be required if Jade intended to move out permanently. The manager explained that a tenant could not be removed merely because the relationship had ended. There would need to be a written request, a release signed by the parties, and confirmation of the new tenancy arrangement. I forwarded the information to Jade by email with a short note asking whether she intended to surrender her interest in the apartment, as she had said she was moving in with Remy. I kept the tone factual and attached the relevant pages of the agreement.
