The attorney was a local practitioner who handled civil disputes and property questions. I brought the lease amendment, bank statements, car-transfer records, and the available messages. She reviewed the documents and explained that legal obligations depended on the actual agreements, not on how either person described the relationship afterward. Since Jade alone held the car loan and I had not guaranteed it, ending a voluntary payment was generally not the same as defaulting on a debt. The joint bank account and apartment needed more careful handling, which was why I was glad we had used written procedures. She also advised me to keep communication factual, preserve relevant records, and avoid making accusations in public.

I left the consultation feeling less triumphant than relieved. I had wanted confirmation that I was not accidentally creating a financial or legal problem while trying to move forward. The attorney did not promise that nobody could complain or threaten a lawsuit, because people can threaten things whether they are likely to succeed or not. She simply gave me a framework for responding if something formal arrived. I updated my spreadsheet with the final utilities, joint-account balance, and security-deposit accounting, then sent Jade the figures through the property manager's established email thread. That was my version of settling practical obligations like an adult.

Jade signed the final account reconciliation after one round of corrections. She objected to a cleaning charge, and I checked the move-out photographs before agreeing that part of it should be adjusted. We divided the remaining shared balance according to our deposits and closed the household account once the bank received the required authorizations. There was no applause and no dramatic declaration. A few forms were signed, a small amount of money moved, and one more connection between us disappeared. It felt strange that the administrative end of four years could happen through a secure electronic signature.

The rest of the week brought the ordinary work of recovering. I washed the bedding, moved a few pieces of furniture, and opened the spare bedroom windows to clear out the smell of a room that had contained scented candles and filming equipment for years. I found an old magnet from one of our road trips behind a bookshelf and sat holding it longer than I expected. There was no useful reason to keep it, but I placed it in a drawer rather than throwing it away. I did not need to prove that I had stopped loving her by erasing every trace of our time together. I only needed to stop organizing my future around the possibility that she might return.

At the station, I told the people who needed to know that the engagement was over. I did not explain the pregnancy or the affair unless somebody was close enough to me that the truth mattered to our friendship. There were sympathetic looks, awkward pauses, and one colleague
