There were conditions. We had to settle outstanding utilities through the effective date, and she needed to collect several boxes she had left in the spare bedroom. The manager arranged a supervised collection window the following week, with another option if our schedules made that impossible. After the amendment became effective and Jade formally surrendered her key rights, maintenance rekeyed the apartment.

Both of us received the notice through the resident portal. I appreciated the written process because it prevented either of us from improvising rules in the middle of a dispute. It also meant there could be no reasonable confusion about when she could retrieve her property.

I had installed a doorbell camera eight months earlier after a series of package thefts in the building. The property manager had approved the device, and it captured the space immediately outside our door, where deliveries were usually left. I seldom checked it except when I received a notification while away from home. That Thursday evening, while I was finishing paperwork at the station, my phone showed a motion alert. Jade was standing outside the apartment with a key in her hand. The camera recorded her putting the key into the changed lock, trying it once, then stepping back and looking at the door as though it had personally insulted her.

She stood there for four minutes and seven seconds according to the camera's recording. She checked her phone, looked toward the stairs, tried the key again, and finally walked away. I could not hear everything she muttered, and I did not need to. She had already received the written notice explaining that the locks would be changed after her tenancy ended.

I saved the clip because it established that she had attempted to enter outside the agreed collection window. Then I sent the property manager a brief message asking that all future arrangements be confirmed in writing. I did not contact Jade about the visit directly.

The camera footage bothered me more than I expected. Part of me wanted to believe she had returned because she missed the apartment, or because the reality of leaving had finally reached her. Another part knew she might simply have wanted something she had forgotten. I had spent years interpreting her smallest actions through the most generous possible explanation. Now I was learning to tolerate not knowing exactly what she intended. My responsibility was not to assign every gesture a hidden motive; it was to maintain clear boundaries and respond to what actually happened.

On Saturday afternoon she returned with her mother. Brenda was a formidable woman who had spent years managing a dental practice and could make ordinary scheduling questions sound like closing arguments before a jury. When Jade and I first started dating, Brenda had welcomed me warmly enough. She
