I sat in my truck for a while before starting the engine. Across the lot, Dana climbed into a small sedan and remained there with both hands on the steering wheel. I wondered what it had cost her to organize two years of painful information into a folder she could carry into a coffee shop. I had been dealing with betrayal for days.
She had been living alongside uncertainty for far longer. Our experiences were not identical, but something about her steadiness made me feel less alone. I had met somebody who understood that documenting an event was not the same as being consumed by it.
On the drive home I thought about Jade's first videos, the bright kitchen, the routines she had believed could improve anybody's life. I wondered when language intended to encourage people had become a way to excuse hurting them. The words themselves were not evil. Growth, alignment, and self-respect can describe real and valuable changes. The problem was using them as substitutes for honesty. When a person says the universe required them to make a choice, it becomes easy to overlook the fact that they still made it.
That night I opened my own records and looked through them in chronological order. The breakup text came first, followed by the ring transaction, bank confirmation, tenancy amendment, messages about the car, Brenda's voicemails, and the doorbell clips. I added a short note recording that I had met Dana and had seen material suggesting Remy had used similar language with previous clients. I did not copy her entire folder. I wrote down what I had observed and what remained uncertain. Then I saved everything and put the phone away.
For the first time since the text arrived, I felt that I had enough information. I did not know how long Jade and Remy had been involved or what they intended to do about the baby. I might never know, and I could live with that. I knew my engagement had ended, my financial obligations were clear, and the people who needed to review Remy's conduct had been given a chance to do so through appropriate channels.
The folder was there if a dispute required it. Otherwise, I wanted it to remain closed. I had accumulated proof of what happened, but I had nothing left to prove to the woman who had written paragraph seven. There is something I have not mentioned in the order it happened, partly because I did not understand its importance until later. Eleven days after Jade sent the breakup text, before my meeting with Dana, she called me for the first time.
