But the real beginning of that morning came years earlier, in a building that no longer existed and with a promise that had almost disappeared from the company along with it. To understand why Daniel's badge mattered, it was necessary to understand why he had never tried to make it matter. He had spent nearly his whole adult life avoiding attention, and he had become unusually good at being overlooked. He did not confuse being invisible with being unimportant, at least not until the day Victoria Grant made that distinction painfully difficult.

Daniel was forty-two years old, a single father, and the person responsible for remembering everything his eight-year-old daughter might forget. That list included lunch money, field trip forms, library books, allergy information, the names of two stuffed animals that were not allowed to sleep separately, and the precise way Lily liked the crusts removed from her sandwiches. Their house was a narrow brick duplex near the eastern edge of the city, where passing buses made the front windows tremble and the kitchen radiator knocked whenever the heat came on. Nothing in it was new except a smoke detector Daniel had installed himself. He had learned to repair almost everything else because replacing things had rarely been an option.

Every weekday, his alarm sounded at 5:10. He rose without turning on the bedroom light, made his way down the hallway, and put a kettle on before opening the cupboard to count what remained for breakfast. Lily usually slept until six, curled beneath a quilt patterned with yellow stars, one arm wrapped around a rabbit whose left ear Daniel had sewn back on three times. He checked her school calendar while the oatmeal warmed. Then he placed a note inside her lunch box, because she had told him once that reading his handwriting in the middle of school made the day feel shorter.
