demonstration prevented the cancellation of the contract. Her father told that story at family dinners as an example of the trust on which his company was built. He had not presented Daniel as a hero from a distant past. He had presented him as the sort of person a business should never become too successful to recognize.

Another document appeared, a note from Elliot written during a later cash shortage. It explained that Daniel had volunteered to delay a reimbursement because suppliers needed to be paid first, and that Elliot intended to make him whole as soon as the company could afford it. Helen found a corresponding repayment record several months afterward, along with a modest bonus Daniel had initially tried to refuse. Victoria stared at the entries. None of the company's modern leadership summaries mentioned this period, because the forms and informal agreements had been filed away as historical documents rather than material relevant to current decisions.

The memory expanded as she read. There had been a flood in the original workshop, a week when employees carried equipment upstairs to keep it dry and Daniel slept on a folding chair beside a temporary generator. There had been a winter when an unreliable heating system almost forced the company to close for a month, and Daniel repaired it between shifts because hiring an outside contractor would have exhausted the remaining budget. There had been evenings when he helped new engineers understand the practical limitations of equipment they had only seen in diagrams. He had done these things without a title that would announce his importance to anyone arriving twenty years later.

"Why didn't I know?" Victoria asked, almost to herself. Daniel heard her. "You knew the building worked," he said quietly. "Most days that was all anybody needed to know."
