"She seemed nice today," she said. Daniel held her hand as they waited for a crossing signal. "People can make serious mistakes," he told her. "Sometimes they decide to learn from them. We have to watch what they do, not just what they say."

That night, Daniel set his badge on the small shelf by the front door, beside his keys, Lily's school photograph, and an old repaired flashlight. The new clip held firmly, though a faint mark remained on the plastic where the original had been pulled loose. He could have replaced the badge entirely, but he preferred to keep it as it was. Not because number 001 made him better than anyone else, and not because a CEO had finally noticed him. It reminded him that dignity was something he had possessed before anyone important had acknowledged it.

Lily came out of her room carrying the shoebox of lunch notes, now repaired with fresh tape. She asked him to read a few aloud before bedtime, and Daniel sat with her on the rug beneath the living-room lamp. She selected the oldest one she could find, folded at the corners and written in his familiar careful handwriting. "I love being your dad," it said. He read it once, then again when she asked, and she leaned against his shoulder until the world beyond the window grew quiet.

The next morning, the lights in the lobby of Grant Technologies came on at their usual hour, the doors opened, and employees began arriving with coffees, backpacks, tools, worries, plans, and lives nobody could understand from a badge. Daniel would be there to repair what needed repairing, and some days people would still pass him without knowing his name. He had never required an audience to be generous or a title to treat someone decently. What changed was not the value of the man wearing number 001. What changed, slowly and imperfectly, was the company's willingness to see the value of everyone else.
