workshop, its frame dusty but its colors still surprisingly clear. Instead of hanging it in her private office, she asked facilities to create a modest company history display near the main entrance, one that named the early technicians, bookkeepers, designers, and support staff alongside the founder. Daniel did not want a ceremony. He agreed to provide accurate dates and names because he believed the others deserved to be remembered, too.
The display opened quietly a month later. Lily came after school with Daniel and stood in front of the photograph, comparing the young man in overalls with the father holding her hand. "You had more hair," she announced. Daniel laughed loudly enough that a few nearby employees turned.
She pointed at Elliot and told him she wished she could have met the man who had worked with her dad. Daniel nodded. "He would have liked you," he said. "He liked people who asked questions."
As they prepared to leave, Victoria happened to pass through the lobby and stopped when she saw them. Daniel introduced Lily, who shook the CEO's hand with a seriousness borrowed from school assemblies. Victoria asked about her history project and listened while Lily described how the original workshop had grown into the company around them. She did not ask Lily to pose for a photograph or use the meeting to make another public statement. She simply thanked her for visiting and wished her luck with the project.
On the walk home, Lily asked whether Victoria was the woman who had broken Daniel's badge. He had not told her the full story, but children heard more than adults thought they did, and the news had traveled through families connected to the company. Daniel answered truthfully that she was. Lily looked puzzled.
