as the man who kept the original business alive when no one else believed it would survive.

"Your employee number is one?" she asked. Daniel nodded. "Yes, ma'am." Martin looked from the card to the toolbox and seemed unsure why three digits should have changed the atmosphere. Victoria was no longer looking at the dusty shirt.

She was remembering an old photograph on the wall of her father's study, two men standing outside a small workshop, one in a suit he had borrowed, the other in grease-stained work clothes, both smiling as though the future had agreed to give them a chance. "Claire," Victoria said, and her assistant stepped closer. "Get human resources. I want his original employment file, not the current summary." Claire glanced at Daniel, who stood in the center of a circle of silence with a toolbox at his feet.

"Right now?" she asked. Victoria did not look away from the badge. "Right now. And ask Mr. Kessler to hold off on any termination paperwork until I review it."

Martin opened his mouth as if to explain that a termination had not yet been formally entered, but Victoria raised one hand. Daniel could hear words moving through the lobby around him, fragments of questions and whispered guesses. A young employee who had started the previous week looked toward the security desk, then toward Daniel, clearly trying to understand why everyone had changed expressions so abruptly. Daniel bent down to pick up the broken metal clip before someone stepped on it. It was a tiny movement, and Victoria watched him make it with an unfamiliar sense of shame.

"Mr. Carter," she said, changing her tone, "would you please wait a moment?" Daniel straightened. "You told me I was fired."

Several employees looked down. Victoria swallowed and said the employment decision would be reviewed, but the words sounded official and empty even to her. Daniel did not move toward the exit. He stood quietly because he had been asked to stay, not because the request erased what she had said before.
