Daniel felt heat rise beneath his collar. "I didn't decide, ma'am. The work order was approved by facilities, and security confirmed the temporary access." Martin shifted his weight beside Victoria, beginning to recognize the problem with his summary, but he did not speak. The lobby had grown quieter. Employees waiting for the elevators turned, and two people near reception stopped their conversation without pretending they had not heard.

"We have confidential material in those offices," Victoria continued. "Do you understand what it means when someone walks into a secured corridor without authorization?" Daniel nodded carefully.

"Yes, ma'am. That's why I called security before I went in. The latch was failing, and it could have trapped somebody on the other side." He offered her the form again. She interpreted the gesture as an attempt to challenge her authority in front of the staff.

"Don't lecture me about security procedures," she said. "I've had enough excuses this morning." Her voice reached the far end of the lobby.

Daniel looked toward Claire, who had arrived behind the executive group and appeared to be searching her phone for the ticket. "You can call Owen Price," he said. "He approved the request. I'm happy to wait while you check."

Victoria could have made that call. She could have turned to Martin and asked why the systems disagreed, or looked at the signed request in Daniel's hand. Any one of those actions would have revealed a maintenance problem rather than a breach. But she had already taken a public position and felt, irrationally, that checking the evidence now would make her appear indecisive. That was the moment a manageable misunderstanding became a failure of leadership.

"Take off your badge," she ordered. Daniel blinked. "Ma'am?" Victoria extended her hand.
