Helen lowered her tablet. Victoria thought suddenly of the budget review she had approved the previous month, when employee hardship assistance had been categorized as a discretionary expense and postponed until the next fiscal year. She thought of the polished slide showing improvements in operating efficiency and realized it had not shown the lives those improvements pressed against. Daniel did not know about that meeting. He was simply describing what he had seen around him, one coworker at a time.

"If you want to make it right," he said, "help them without making them beg. Make it possible to have a difficult week and still feel like you belong here." His voice remained quiet, but he no longer looked at the floor. Victoria understood that he could have asked for a title, a raise, or a formal place in the company's history. Instead, he was asking her to notice people who had never appeared in her executive reports.

"There is something I can do about that," Victoria said, though she knew a promise in front of an audience would mean little without details. Daniel nodded. "Then do it."

He glanced toward the clock above reception. It was nearly eleven, and the spare part he had been waiting for was still due to arrive that afternoon. He asked whether he was allowed to finish the maintenance ticket. For the first time that morning, Victoria seemed genuinely uncertain how to answer a simple question.

"You are not fired," she said. "Your employment and access remain active. We'll make sure the incident is documented accurately, including my responsibility." Daniel looked at Helen, who confirmed with a nod that the termination had never been entered. Then he picked up the broken clip and placed it in his pocket. He did not return to work immediately, because something about the exchange still needed to be said.
