"I understand my choices."

"Then make a better one next time."

Marcus ordered the broken trays cleared away before anyone completed an incident report. Victor insisted that the report still be filed and that the employee who had been splashed have his foot checked. Ethan quietly supported the decision by asking where the incident forms were kept. Marcus had already returned to his office, but Ethan could feel the fear he left behind like heat trapped against the ceiling.

Later, while Ethan was sorting sharp utensils into a separate container, Olivia brushed her forearm against a hot pan that someone had placed in the wrong location. She drew back sharply and turned toward the sink. A narrow red mark appeared along her skin, and she immediately pulled down the sleeve of her jacket as though hiding it might keep the kitchen running. Ethan set aside the utensils and went to her.

"Olivia, are you okay?"

"It's fine. Just a little burn."

"You need to cool it under running water and have someone look at it."

"If I leave the line, Marcus will say I abandoned my station."

"Then I'll cover the dishes while you take five minutes," Ethan said, nodding toward Victor. "He can watch your station until you're back."

"You already have more work than anyone here."

"And you have only one comfortable arm right now. Go."

Victor saw what had happened and immediately arranged proper first aid and relief for Olivia. Ethan kept the dishes moving while Priya took over one of the burners. No one shouted, no food was ruined, and no guest noticed the temporary adjustment. It was a small demonstration of what a kitchen could do when workers were allowed to solve a problem instead of hide it.

When Olivia returned, her forearm had been treated and covered with a clean dressing. She resumed work carefully, favoring the uninjured arm when lifting heavy pans. Ethan kept the clean equipment coming without needing a single reminder. By the time dinner preparation began, the entire line had caught up.

"You didn't have to do all that," Olivia told him during a brief pause.

"You brought me lunch yesterday. I guess we're even."

"Not even close," she said, and this time her smile lasted longer.

In the late afternoon Victor found Ethan near the storage shelves and asked him to help move a box away from a blocked emergency exit. Once the path was clear, Victor leaned against the doorframe. "You stand up to Marcus more than people who've been here for years," he observed. "I can't decide whether you're very brave or you don't understand how easy it is to lose a job."

"I understand what losing a job can do to someone," Ethan answered. "I think that's why threatening people with it should never be casual."

Victor looked at him for a long moment. "You sound like someone who used to manage."

Ethan picked up a box of fresh towels. "I used to spend more time in kitchens. I'm trying to remember what that felt like."
