Adrian Brooks entered through the front doors with two members of his investment team. He was a composed man in his early fifties, known for asking more questions than most executives expected and for remembering the answers. His father had operated a neighborhood grocery store, and he had spoken with Ethan before about the hazards of expanding a business faster than its culture could sustain. The current meeting concerned long-term funding and performance across the restaurant group, not ownership of the Halsted Street building, but Marcus had made it sound as if every job depended on impressing Brooks that night.

"Mr. Brooks, welcome," Marcus said, extending both hands. "We've prepared a wonderful evening for you. I think you'll find the restaurant is performing better than ever."

"Thank you, Mr. Reed," Brooks replied. "Is everything ready?"

"Absolutely. Our team is operating at the highest standard in the group, and our recent numbers prove it. I've taken personal responsibility for building a disciplined culture here."

Brooks glanced around the room. "I'd like to meet the owner before we begin."

Marcus smiled with the confidence of a man who believed he knew exactly where everyone stood. "Of course. Mr. Cole is a very private man, but I'll contact his office. We rarely have the pleasure of hosting him without a formal schedule."

"There's no need," Brooks said. "He's already here."

Marcus's smile held, but his eyes narrowed. "Here? Where?"

Brooks gestured toward the service corridor. "Would you please ask your dishwasher to join us?"

"The dishwasher?" Marcus gave a short laugh. "This is a serious business meeting, Mr. Brooks. I'm afraid there may have been a misunderstanding."

"I assure you I know exactly what kind of meeting this is."

Marcus stood frozen for one uncomfortable beat, then moved rapidly toward the kitchen. Ethan was near the pass, placing clean serving dishes where Victor had requested them. Olivia was finishing a sauce beside him, and Priya was checking the time on the final roast. The ordinary sounds of the kitchen continued until Marcus swung open the door.

"What are you doing out here?" he barked. "Get back to work."

Ethan removed his gloves and set them on the station. "I think I'll stay."

"You've got some nerve," Marcus said. "You have one chance to stop making a spectacle of yourself."

Behind Marcus, Adrian Brooks appeared in the doorway with Daniel and Simone. The conversation in the kitchen died away. Victor stepped forward instinctively, ready to protect the service schedule, but Daniel lifted a hand and asked everyone to remain where they were for a moment. Ethan looked at Olivia, who had gone completely still, and felt a sharp regret that the announcement would reach her in this public way.

"Mr. Reed," Brooks said, "I'd like you to meet Mr. Ethan Cole, the founder and majority owner of Cole's Grand Restaurant Group."

Marcus looked from Brooks to the dishwasher and back again. "That's impossible."

"It isn't," Ethan said. "For the past several days I've worked in this restaurant through an approved temporary assignment, using my first name and a different surname. I dressed like any other kitchen worker because I wanted to see how this place operated when nobody thought the owner was watching."
