Victor looked toward the pass, where finished plates waited to be collected. He had spent years protecting food quality while trying to shield younger employees from Marcus's temper. The request forced him to decide whether protecting those employees meant remaining silent or finally telling the owner what he knew.

"Marcus," Victor said, slowly, "the kitchen has been running on fear."

The manager's head snapped toward him. Victor continued before he could be interrupted. "People are afraid to report mistakes, afraid to report broken equipment, and afraid to ask questions when deliveries don't match the paperwork. Some delivery records were changed after the goods arrived. I know because I kept the original copies."

"You are going to throw away your career for him?" Marcus demanded, pointing at Ethan.

"I'm trying to save what's left of it," Victor said. "Not the title. The work itself. I used to be proud of what this kitchen stood for."

A quiet sound came from near the dish station. It was Luis setting a rack down because he no longer trusted his hands to hold it. Hannah stood at the doorway with a tray of water glasses and did not move. Every employee in the room understood the risks Victor had just taken, even if the person holding those risks no longer possessed the same authority.

Ethan moved beside Victor without turning the gesture into a spectacle. "Thank you for speaking," he said. "You should have been able to say those things long before tonight."

Marcus spread his hands. "I made this place profitable. I kept expenses under control when other managers couldn't. Look at the figures, Ethan. You approved them."

"I did," Ethan said. "And that is part of what I need to answer for. But the numbers do not give you permission to mistreat people. The staff did the work. You took the credit, and the reports may not reflect the truth about how the work was done."

"You're going to believe a dishwasher's gossip over four years of results?"

"For four years you were responsible for leading people," Ethan answered. "Tonight you have told me exactly how you value them. The independent investigators will determine what happened in the records. I don't need an accountant to tell me that threatening someone for bringing a guest water was wrong."

Marcus stared at him, face red. The dining room beyond the doors continued to hum with conversation, and Ethan could hear the pianist beginning another piece. For a moment the contrast felt unbearable: the lovely music outside and the frightened people inside, the polished promises and the reality they had concealed. He turned to Victor and asked him to keep dinner service running safely while Daniel arranged the next steps.

"Everyone who is scheduled tonight will be paid for the full shift," Ethan said to the staff. "Nobody is being asked to give a statement in front of a manager or an investor. There will be private opportunities to speak with an independent investigator, and retaliation of any kind will not be tolerated. You do not need to prove your worth to me in this room. You have already been doing the work."
