"My mother used to say you learn more about someone by watching how they treat a person who can't do anything for them," Olivia said. "I used to think that was just something parents told children to make them polite. Now I think she was warning me."

"Warning you about what?"

"People who are kind only when they think kindness will be rewarded. And people who are cruel because they think nobody important is looking."

Ethan looked toward the empty office. "Both kinds work in places like this."

"I suppose they work everywhere," she replied. "The question is which kind gets promoted."

At home Ethan found an email from Daniel with an outline of the review's preliminary findings. Simone's team had located supplier confirmations showing goods billed to the Halsted Street location but not documented as received there. The system's revision history showed multiple changes made from management-level accounts after the relevant delivery dates, and several payroll entries had been adjusted in ways that warranted employee interviews. The findings were serious enough to require protective action, but Daniel emphasized that the team had not yet determined every person's responsibility or whether every irregularity reflected deliberate misconduct.

Ethan read the careful language twice. He wanted the truth, not a verdict designed to satisfy his anger, and he reminded himself that Marcus was entitled to a fair investigation even after treating his employees unfairly. Personal contempt would be an inadequate basis for a final employment decision, especially when financial questions might involve people outside the restaurant. The company's responsibility was to secure records, protect workers, and follow the evidence wherever it led.

A message from Simone arrived a little later. She had established an immutable archive of the relevant electronic records, obtained vendor copies, and arranged a comparison against bank payment confirmations. Some invoices listed quantities or prices that differed from the documents held by suppliers. She requested temporary restrictions on Marcus's access to sensitive administrative functions once the investor meeting concluded, provided a suitable acting manager could be appointed immediately.

Ethan called Daniel to discuss the timing. "If we wait until the audit is complete, he'll have more opportunities to intimidate people. If we move without preparation, the kitchen will be thrown into chaos."

"We can arrange an interim operator from the flagship and keep Victor in control of food service," Daniel said. "Payroll administration can shift to headquarters temporarily. We can suspend Marcus's management authority pending the formal review, explain his right to respond, and preserve the evidence."

"What about Olivia and the others?"

"Their positions remain protected. The review will look at retaliation, disciplinary records, safety incidents, and pay. You should let Human Resources handle individual interviews so employees aren't speaking directly to the owner under pressure."

Ethan was grateful for the reminder. He wanted Olivia to know she had been heard, but that was not the same as giving her a safe process for describing what had happened. He asked Daniel to arrange an independent contact and a clear written notice that no one would be punished for participating. Then he set his phone down and watched the city lights reflected in the river outside his window.
