A second deposit followed after the payroll review identified an underpayment affecting one of her previous shifts. Several coworkers received corrections as well, with explanations of how the figures had been calculated. Olivia read the notice twice and felt a sudden anger at how long employees had been told to trust numbers they could not see. The money mattered, but the ability to question the calculation mattered nearly as much.

At home Grace watched her daughter lay the corrected statement beside the older bills. "You seem different," she observed. "Not happier exactly. Just less like you're expecting someone to shout at you when the phone rings."

Olivia sat down. "The manager's gone. There was an investigation. The new people seem serious about changing things."

"And the dishwasher?"

Olivia stared at her mother. "How did you know about that?"

"You told me about him every other night. Lately you've been careful not to mention him at all."

Olivia explained that Ethan had been the owner, that he had been observing the restaurant without telling anyone, and that she had shared worries about Grace's bills while believing they were both ordinary workers. Grace listened without interrupting. When Olivia finished, the older woman picked up the chipped graduation photograph and ran a thumb along the frame.

"I can see why you're hurt," she said. "He should have told you the truth. And you are allowed to take time deciding what his apology means."

"People act as if I should be grateful. The owner noticed me, so I'm supposed to think it's wonderful."

"Are they saying that?"

"Some of them. They say he could change my life."

"Your life isn't a prize someone gets to hand you for being kind," Grace answered. "You earned your skills long before he met you. If he offers an opportunity, you can judge it on its merits. And if you don't want it, you can say no."

Olivia sat quietly, relieved that her mother understood the distinction. She did not want to punish Ethan forever, but she did not want the story of their meeting reduced to a sentimental lesson in which a wealthy owner rewarded the right poor employee. The truth was more difficult and therefore more valuable. She had helped a person because he needed help; he had concealed who he was; both things could be true without canceling each other.

Near the end of the second week, Olivia received a message from Human Resources inviting her to a meeting about possible career development. The invitation included a description of the process, confirmation that attendance was voluntary, and a note saying the conversation would not affect her current employment. She considered declining, partly because she disliked the thought of being singled out. Then she remembered Grace's photograph and the years of training that had brought her to the restaurant, and she decided she would at least hear what the company had to say.
