"The kind that makes money. Something you clearly don't understand."

Olivia paused beside the storage shelves. For a moment Ethan thought she would say nothing, that exhaustion would finally outweigh the need to defend what she believed. Instead she turned and met Marcus's gaze. "I understand that good food costs money, good service takes training, and employees need to be paid. I also understand that a customer who leaves feeling ashamed may never come back, no matter how impressive the room looks."

Marcus took a step toward her. "One more mistake, one more complaint, one more moment of you acting like you own this place, and you're gone."

"I don't want to own this place," Olivia said. "I just want to be proud of working here."

The words were quiet, almost gentle, and seemed to anger him more because he could not turn them into a shouted insubordination. Marcus told her to return to her station. Victor remained motionless until the manager had gone, then joined Olivia at the prep counter and asked whether she wanted him to document the conversation. She shook her head, frightened by the thought of another report carrying her name.

When the kitchen emptied after the last table, Ethan found Olivia wiping down a stainless-steel surface that was already clean. Her shoulders moved as if she were trying to work the anger out of them. He set a basket of polished utensils beside the sink and asked whether she wanted company or quiet. She glanced at the clock and told him the floor still had to be mopped, so he took the mop and began at the far end of the room.

"You shouldn't have to choose between your job and your conscience," he said after a while.

"Easy to say when you have nothing to lose."

"You'd be surprised."

Olivia turned sharply. "I don't think you understand what I mean. If he cuts my hours, I can't pay for my mother's appointments. If I get dismissed with a warning on my record, I might not even get an interview somewhere else. That's not a thought experiment for me, Ethan. It's what happens when the rent is due."

He stopped moving the mop. "You're right. I spoke as though making the right choice costs everyone the same amount, and it doesn't. I didn't mean to dismiss what you're risking."

Her expression softened a little. "I know you didn't. You're always trying to make things fair, even when nobody asked you to."

"Maybe someone should have asked a long time ago."

"Maybe," she said. "But I don't need you to rescue me. I need this place to stop punishing people for telling the truth."

They worked quietly for several minutes. Ethan cleaned beneath the lower shelving while Olivia checked that the food labels were correct for the next morning. The tasks gave their conversation room to settle without demanding an immediate answer. He was increasingly conscious that if he revealed his identity now, after she had told him so much, he would change the meaning of every earlier exchange.
