"Already done," he replied. "I found a rhythm."

"You found one for everybody, apparently." She inspected the neatly stacked pans. "For once, things appear to be under control."

Marcus, passing behind them, stopped long enough to take credit. "That's what happens when people finally follow instructions."

"The team has worked hard," Olivia said.

"Don't confuse doing your job with being indispensable," Marcus answered. "I've replaced chefs before."

The moment was brief, but Ethan saw something change in Olivia's eyes. She did not shrink this time. She simply returned to her sauce and continued working, no longer willing to surrender even the private knowledge that she had done her job well. Ethan admired that quiet resistance and feared the hurt his own truth would soon cause her.

An hour before the investor dinner, Daniel sent one final message confirming that the original records were secured and that an independent representative was present in the building. Adrian Brooks, the lead investor, had been informed that the owner would join the discussion in an unconventional way and had agreed to keep the arrangement confidential until Ethan was ready. A senior operations director was waiting nearby to take over management responsibilities if the suspension became necessary. The procedural pieces were in place.

Ethan stood at the sink with water running over his gloves and listened to the dining room fill. From the far side of the kitchen he could hear Marcus rehearsing the welcome speech he planned to give Adrian Brooks. Every sentence praised leadership, discipline, efficiency, and the company's commitment to people. Ethan shut off the tap and dried his hands with the same care Olivia had shown him on his first morning, wondering how anyone could use so many good words while ignoring what they required.

At seven twenty-five the dining room was ready. Fresh flowers stood in low arrangements between the place settings, candles burned without dripping, and the waitstaff moved so quietly that a guest might imagine the tables arranged themselves. The air carried the scent of roasted herbs, polished wood, and warm bread. To Marcus it looked like a flawless demonstration of his leadership; to Ethan, watching from the kitchen, it looked like the result of a hundred small sacrifices nobody had acknowledged.

Hannah entered the service corridor with the careful urgency she used when carrying a full tray. "Mr. Reed, the investors' car has arrived," she said.

Marcus straightened his cuffs. "Everyone, look professional. This meeting determines our future."

He turned to Victor and instructed him to keep the chefs out of sight until the first course had been served. When Victor explained that Olivia would need to review one of the dishes with the guests because she had developed it, Marcus refused. He wanted the investors to meet executives, not kitchen employees, and he told Victor not to confuse personal pride with business priorities. Ethan heard Olivia say nothing, but he saw her set the final garnish down with painstaking care.
